The NY Forward program provides funding and planning support to help communities across the state transform their downtowns into economic drivers and increase housing options and business development with a focus on hamlets, villages and neighborhood-scale commercial centers. The 2026 NY Forward will build on the success of Morris’s current momentum to support equitable downtown recovery in the community.
Nestled in the scenic Butternut Valley of southern Otsego County, the Village of Morris was first settled in 1773 and incorporated in 1870. This vibrant historic walkable community is located conveniently just 15 miles northwest of Oneonta and southeast of Norwich. The village is surrounded by state and county forests, bordered by the Butternut Creek and its tributaries and the area has existing hiking and biking trails. The entire village is located within an historic district containing buildings dating back nearly two centuries. As an example of Morris’ commitment to preserving its notable architecture, the oldest commercial building, built in 1829, is still being used to house the Morris Historical Society.

Our community has transitioned through industrial, market town, and agricultural phases and is now growing from the arts and culture movement. We want to embrace our natural and cultural resources while creating a vibrant, walkable downtown that will expand our arts and culture legacy, investing in our recreational land and water trails as we embrace 21 century technologies.
